A communications team member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, is criticising the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, for failing to resign after vowing to do so, should the NPP lose the Akwatia by-election.

He says the office of the MP is one that comes with credibility and should be accorded as such, therefore condemning him for always putting the office into disrepute.

According to Owusu, the same MP had promised to chop off his head if the NPP loses the 2024 election, a promise he couldn’t fulfill after the party eventually lost the poll.

He is therefore calling on the lawmaker to emulate serious minded personalities who have represented the constituents in the past, and refrain from making promises he can’t fulfill.

“Let me say to Michael Baafi that before he became the MP for New Juaben South, there had been serious minds who had been MPs for that area,” he stated, mentioning the likes of  Yaw Barimah, a lawyer, Beatrice Bernice Boateng, and Mark Assibey Yeboah, who was the Chair of the Finance Committee of Parliament, who served the constituents before Okyere Baafi’s arrival.

He chastised him for using any least opportunity to make promises he cannot fulfill, derailing the honour that comes with the office.

“Any least opportunity, the last time he said he’ll chop off the head if the NPP loses, the head is still there. We are not done with that aspect then you come and make this wild promise that when the NPP loses you’ll leave your seat.

“Now the people of New Juaben South are saying they want to get you out of your seat. The position that he holds, if he does not know, is a position that comes with credibility,” he stated.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, issued a strong ultimatum ahead of the Akwatia by-election that he will resign from Parliament should the NPP fail to reclaim the seat.

Speaking to GHOne TV during the one-week observance of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, Mr Baafi accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to deliver on its 2024 campaign promises.

“If the NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP. Mark my words!” he stated confidently.

However, he has refused to honour his words, calling on Ghanaians to forgive him for going too far.
