The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Naa Momo Lartey, has indicated that Ghana’s school feeding grant could rise from GHS 2 to GHS 5 per child, if economic conditions continue to improve.

She made the remarks during a spot check at selected schools in Accra on Thursday, September 4, 2025, where she assessed food distribution, quality of the food and caterer attendance.

Dr. Lartey emphasized that while the current allocation is limited, government is working toward a more sustainable increase.

“Two cedis per child is simply not enough. We initially pushed for ten cedis but settled on two through negotiation. Our goal is to reach five cedis as the economy improves. In the meantime, we’re making the most of what we have and have trained caterers to ensure they’re prepared,” the Minister said.

She reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving the quality and consistency of meals served under the national school feeding programme, which plays a vital role in enhancing child nutrition and boosting school attendance.

Dr. Lartey also issued a firm warning to caterers who fail to meet standards, stating that non-compliance will attract sanctions.

“Caterers who don’t cook won’t get paid. If you’re contracted for 30 days and miss more than five, there must be consequences. Contracts should go to those who are ready and committed.”

Her visit follows the government’s announcement that all outstanding debts owed to caterers have been cleared.

She expressed satisfaction with the presence and performance of caterers during the first week of school resumption.

“We’re pleased to see caterers showing up and making an effort. Our message to the children is simple, tell your siblings that when they come to school, feeding won’t be a problem.”
