Biodiversity Officer at environmental NGO, Friends of the Ocean, Eric Atsiatorme has emphasized the crucial role endangered species like sharks and dolphins play in protecting ocean health and the need to protect them.
According to him, blue sharks and dolphins are known to absorb heavy metals from the marine environment, a process that contributes significantly to maintaining the balance of the ocean ecosystem.
He was speaking in an interview on Connect FM’s midday news, Orekodo Kasaebo in Takoradi on September 5.
His remarks follow the circulation of a video showing residents jubilantly celebrating the catch of a shark. Eric Atsiatorme who highlighted the importance of conserving these marine animals for the long-term sustainability of the ocean, also cautioned fishermen about the potential dangers following such catches.

He pointed out safety risks associated with handling large and potentially dangerous marine creatures like sharks.
The biodiversity officer disclosed that recent legislative (Fisheries Act, 2025, Act 1146, Sec. 45) changes are aimed at improving marine conservation efforts. The new Act introduces higher fines for illegal fishing practices, implements stricter monitoring systems, and enforces stronger regulations specifically designed to protect artisanal fisheries.
The Act also expands the boundaries of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), allowing for better control and protection of marine resources.
He has urged all stakeholders to adhere to these regulations to ensure the survival of these vital species and the overall health of the marine ecosystem.
