The Eastern Regional Police Command together with the Eastern South Regional Command on September 1, 2026 through an intelligence-led operation arrested a notorious suspected armed robber, Bube Gariba at Akateng in the Eastern Region.
This follows a spate of highway robberies on the Nsawam-Suhum stretch.
The Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Department (PID) launched a crackdown in Akateng, near Asesewa, targeting a gang suspected to be responsible for five recent highway robberies along the Accra-Kumasi Highway, specifically targeting commuters at Kwafokrom, Anoff Nsawam-Adeiso, Apedwa, Adasawase-Ankaase, and Enyiresi all in the Eastern South Region.
According to the police, Bube Gariba confessed to participating in three of the highway robberies near Anyinam during preliminary investigations and interrogation.
He further revealed that he received cash payouts of GHS 5,700 and GHS 1,500 from the stolen booty.
He named his accomplices as Mohammadu, Ali and Abdulai. Suspect Gariba also named one Osmanu, a resident of Accra as the gang leader and intimated that Osmanu was the person who provided the two pump action guns used to terrorize passengers in the previous robberies.
According to the police statement, an accomplice identified as Mohammadu managed to flee the scene after being alerted by his wife, who actively obstructed the Police from apprehending the suspect.
The escaped suspect’s wife, Karia Hawa Isha, aged 22, was immediately taken into custody.
Nine (9) other individuals were arrested at the location and are currently being screened to determine their level of involvement in the robbery incidents.
All suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
A manhunt is actively underway to apprehend Mohammadu, the gang leader Osmanu who fled and all remaining members of the syndicate.
The Ghana Police Service assured the public of its continuous commitment to weeding out violent crimes and ensuring maximum peace and security on all major highways and in our communities.
The Service urged all citizens with information about criminals to furnish the Eastern Regional Command with such vital information.
