National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has indicated that the Government’s flagship 24-hour economy programme has already taken off in some state institutions.
According to him, the policy is being rolled out gradually and not at once as many expect.
General Mosquito, as he is popularly known in politics, was speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when he was asked when the 24-hour economy will start.
The probe followed criticisms of the Government’s failure to implement the policy since assuming office, despite touting it as its flagship policy in the lead up to the elections.
“Many places have started. I’m at Ghana Ports. We have started employing people and our port runs 24 hours. It is company by company, department by department,” he stated, adding that “Passport office and others have started so it’s a gradual process.”
According to him, the programme cannot be executed at a go at all places, but rather requires a gradual process since the implementation requires certain criteria to be met.
“You can’t legislate that everyone should go and do it at once because there are some conditions to follow before doing that,” he stated.
The 24-hour economy was a key campaign promise of the NDC in the 2024 elections. President John Dramani Mahama has since assented to the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, establishing the Authority to coordinate the policy.
Under the policy, the Tema and Takoradi Ports have officially rolled out 24-hour operations, extending round-the-clock services to key terminals to reduce cargo delays and improve trade facilitation.
State agencies, including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Ghana Publishing Company, and the Passport Office are also running round-the-clock services, while 12 Oil Marketing Companies are now providing 24-hour services across 268 filling stations nationwide.
