The 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat (24h+) has unveiled plans to expand the Northshore Apparel project in Savelugu into a major light industrial hub, with enhanced 24-Hour garment manufacturing and agro-processing businesses.
The proposed industrial park will build on the success of Northshore Apparel project and is expected to attract new businesses, increase exports and create jobs in Savelugu and across the Northern Region.
The Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy Programme, Mr. Goosie Tanoh, announced the plans at the official opening of the Northshore Apparel 24-Hour project in Savelugu.
He said the vision was to move from a single apparel factory to a cluster of producers, followed by an industrial park and eventually a broader light industrial corridor anchored around Northshore Apparel Company.
“The next step after the Northshore factory is a cluster of garment producers around it. After the cluster — an industrial park. After the park — a veritable production corridor of light industry, anchored around Northshore Apparel,” Mr. Tanoh said.
He added that work towards the various stages of the development had already commenced.
Northshore Apparel currently employs more than 2,300 people, providing substantial employment opportunities for young people in the Northern Region.
The company currently operates a two-shift system and is expected to transition to a three-shift, 24-hour operation as it expands production.
The expansion is expected to create additional jobs and further increase the company’s contribution to the Ghanaian economy.
Mr. Tanoh said the planned park would leverage Northshore Apparel’s existing workforce, infrastructure and production capacity.
He indicated that the development would create opportunities for other manufacturers to establish operations within the enclave, helping to build a stronger industrial value chain around garment production and agro-processing.
The expansion is also expected to create new markets for local suppliers of cotton, packaging, transportation, catering and other support services.
NORTHSHORE AND THE 24-HOUR ECONOMY VISION
President John Dramani Mahama officially commissioned the Northshore Apparel Hub and described the garment manufacturing facility as a major example of his government’s 24-hour economy vision.
“This is an example of what our vision, the 24-hour economy initiative, is meant to do. Northshore is going to run several shifts, and it means that several more young people will get jobs to do,” he said.
