A dawn fire has razed parts of European Town in Sekondi-Takoradi, destroying several wooden structures including a popular brothel and nearby shops.
The fire, which broke out around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2025, is said to have started from one of the brothel structures before spreading rapidly to adjoining facilities.
According to eyewitnesses, the wooden nature of the buildings and the presence of gas cylinders worsened the situation.

“The fire started around 5:30 am from one of the wooden structures hosting the prostitutes. Their structures are made of wood where four people occupy one. Because the structures are wooden and all the other structures around are also made of wood, that is what spread the fire faster,” Philip Annan, an eyewitness told Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show.
He added that gas cylinders inside some of the rooms exploded during the blaze, accelerating the spread and destruction.
“As the fire was spreading, gas cylinders kept inside the structures were also exploding and that is what spread the fire faster. It has also affected traders who have their shops around. One person selling jeans and other wears has had the shop burnt to ashes,” . Annan added.
Several traders have lost thousands of cedis worth of goods, with many left devastated at the scene.
“There are so many traders who have lost thousands of Ghana cedis and valuable properties. Some of the traders are around shedding tears and it is sad watching them,” the eyewitness noted.
The Ghana National Fire Service has since managed to bring the situation under control.
At least thirty wooden structures are estimated to have been destroyed in the incident.
