A former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has said the ongoing internal wrangling within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is normal.
A myriad of issues have come up since the NPP lost the December 2024 elections, with blame games on what constituted the party’s defeat.
But the former lawmaker believes the recent developments in the party are not peculiar to the NPP, saying the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) would have experienced same if it were in opposition.
Mr. Atta Akyea, in an exclusive interview with TV3 on Monday, September 15, 2025, said what is happening is not anything new.
“Sometimes they should flip the argument, and if President Mahama is no longer the President, you will have a similar scenario in the NDC. So right now, what you’re seeing is normal political dynamics,” he stated.
The internal wranglings within the NPP, according to political experts, threaten to disintegrate the party.
The disputes, largely centered around the party’s flag bearer race and leadership issues, have raised concerns about the NPP’s chances in the 2028 general elections following its abysmal defeat in the 2024 polls.
Kennedy Agyapong, a flag bearer hopeful, has been particularly vocal about his concerns regarding the party’s internal issues. He stated that “not even Jesus can win 2028 for NPP if we don’t solve internal issues first.”
He believes that the party’s leadership should prioritise resolving internal conflicts before proceeding with flag bearer elections. He raised this concern when the leadership, through a vote at Congress following a proposal by the post-election defeat committee, resorted to organise its presidential primary ahead of the parliamentary and other grassroots leadership elections.
Political science lecturer, Dr. Isaac Brako of the University of Education, Winneba, has warned that the internal wranglings will negatively affect the party’s victory in 2028. He urges aspirants to focus on evidence-based campaigns and avoid personal attacks, emphasising that a divided party cannot be victorious.
Also, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama, has also called for unity among national executives, stressing the need for the party to work together to achieve victory in 2028. He has advised the party’s National Chairman and General Secretary to work with other executives to build trust and avoid suspicion.
Experts have shared that if these conflicts are not resolved, the internal conflicts within the NPP could lead to electoral defeat in 2028. They argue that the party’s infighting could damage its reputation, erode its unity, and make it challenging to present a strong front against its opponents.
The NPP’s internal wranglings have sparked concerns among party members and supporters, who worry about the potential consequences of a divided party. But Atta Akyea believes what is happening is not anything new since every party in opposition experiences same.
