Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama is set to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 25, 2025.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the disclosure at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, September 15, 2025.

He noted that President Mahama will deliver Ghana’s national statement. He will be the 12th speaker during the high-level week of the 80th UN General Assembly session.

This year’s Assembly will run from September 22 to 30, 2025, on the theme, “Better Together, 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”

Ablakwa also noted that, the President, while in New York, will also engage in bilateral meetings with other world leaders, including the Presidents of South Africa, South Korea, Emir of Qatar, the Crown Prince of Kuwait, the President of Sudan, and the Prime Ministers of The Netherlands, Austria, Ukraine and Suriname.

He added that the President would also host two side events reflecting his African Union leadership roles. On September 24, 2025, he will lead a session on Africa’s financial sovereignty in his capacity as AU Champion for African Financial Institutions.

On September 25, Ghana will co-host another session with Senegal on reparatory justice, in line with his role as AU Champion for Reparatory Justice.

The Minister added that the President would also deposit the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons during his engagements.

Mr Ablakwa used the briefing to underline Ghana’s growing profile in continental affairs, pointing to the election of three Ghanaians to senior AU positions.

Ambassador Macharia Kamau is now Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Ambassador Genevieve Aheto is a member of the AU Commission on International Law, and Kwame Edem Senanu has joined the AU Advisory Board Against Corruption.

He further noted that Ghana’s lobbying helped Dr Delese Mimi Darko secure her appointment as the first Director General of the African Medicines Agency and Dr Oduro Osae’s election to the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration.

Ghana’s regional engagement, Mr Ablakwa recalled, was also demonstrated when the country hosted the launch of the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on April 22, 2025, in Accra.
