Six suspects have been arrested by the North East Regional Police Command in a major anti-narcotics operation at Gbintiri, near Nalerigu in the North East region.
The police also intercepted 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as ‘Red’.
The operation, carried out by the Police and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), according to a release issued by the police on Sunday, September 21, 2025, revealed that the exercise was carried on Thursday, September 18, where two trucks suspected of transporting illicit substances were intercepted.
The vehicles with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14 were loaded at Sankase in the Republic of Togo, and was heading to Gbintiri in the North East region of Ghana.
“A search of the trucks uncovered the 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as ‘Red,’ concealed among other goods in the truck with registration number GR 1712-16. The exhibits have since been secured for evidential purposes,” the statement contained.
Police say they Alhassan Braimah, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Iddrisu, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik, were identified as the suspects.
The statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabik Anmain, Public Affairs Officer for the North East Regional Command, Moses Ayorik was to receive the drugs and transport them to another person based in Gushegu.
The statement added that all the suspects admitted to their roles in smuggling the drugs into the country during interrogation.
It has also been confirmed in the statement that all the suspects are in custody assisting with investigation, while efforts are in place to clampdown on other persons believed to be linked to the syndicate.
The police command assured the public that it remains committed to clamping down on the trafficking of restricted drugs, which pose severe risks to public health and safety, especially in northern Ghana.
