Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has appealed to New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to choose him as their presidential candidate in the party’s upcoming primary.

He urged delegates not to hold his campaign team members’ actions against him, emphasising that he has no issues with them and should not be penalised for any perceived offences.

The NPP’s 2028 flag bearer hopeful, speaking during his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region on Friday, October 3, 2025, said that if any of his campaign team members have offended any of the delegates, they should deal with them at their level and not extend it to him at the polls to alter his destiny.

“I want you all to understand that I’m the one on the ballot and no one else. So if someone else in my campaign team has offended you, don’t let your issues with that person affect me, because I personally have no issues with you,” he stated.

“Don’t let anyone’s problem affect my chances; you and I aren’t involved in any insults. If you vote for me, I’ll come and help you. So let’s not allow anyone’s issues to affect my future,” he reiterated.

The New Patriotic Party has officially announced January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary. This has set the stage for a competitive election to choose the party’s flag bearer for the 2028 general elections.

The party made the decision at a crucial meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council on June 17, 2025, according to its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

Apart from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, other key contestants include Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Former Press Secretary for John Agyekum Kufuor, the former President, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, will also be contesting.

A potential runoff is scheduled for February 14, 2026, if no candidate secures a majority vote to became the presidential candidate. The NPP’s presidential primary promises to be a pivotal moment for the party as it prepares for a potential return to government in 2028.
