President John Dramani Mahama has assured global leaders that Ghana will soon have a female President, extolling the country’s strides in female empowerment over the years.

President Mahama, speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing on Monday, October 13, 2025, said “my country Ghana remains steadfast in its pursuit of gender equality and the empowerment of our women.”

He highlighted the efforts the nation has made under his leadership to ensure women are considered at the topmost decision-making positions in the country, indicating how far the nation has fared in renewing “the spirit of the Beijing Declaration and accelerating its implementation.”

The President touted his achievements in Ghana as African Union Champion for Gender and Women’s Empowerment, regarding how women have risen in the decision-making hierarchy.

“Under my leadership and in my capacity as the African Union Champion for Gender and Women’s Empowerment, the Government of Ghana has continued to take decisive steps to mainstream gender across our national development policies,” he noted.

Stating that the country now boasts of a female Vice President, President Mahama was confident that Ghana may soon have a female ascending the highest office of the land.

“We’ve achieved historic milestones, including the election of Ghana’s first female vice president and the unprecedented appointment of women to leadership positions in government, the judiciary, the security services and key national institutions.”

He explained that “these are not just symbolic gestures, they’re deliberate affirmation that women deserve a seat at the table of the highest levels of decision making.”

“And I am confident that in the very near future our women will break the glass ceiling and there’ll be a woman president of the Republic of Ghana,” the President added.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, organised by the UN and held in Beijing.

While in Beijing to champion women’s empowerment, President Mahama and his delegation will also focus on strengthening Sino-Ghanaian ties and investment.

He is set to hold talks with the President of China, Xi Jinping, who is hosting the Forum, to strengthen the ties between the Asian giants and the West African nation.

Aside from his meeting with the Chinese President, John Mahama will also interact with the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Li Qiang.

He will also meet with Chinese business leaders and host a Presidential Investment Forum, expected to bring Ghanaian businesses, their Chinese counterparts, and investors together to explore opportunities in Ghana.

President Mahama, who is accompanied by the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, and officials of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Free Zones Authority, and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, will also visit Fujian Province to meet businesses with a presence in Ghana.

These engagements aim to strengthen the long-standing partnership between Ghana and China and promote greater cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
