The Headmaster of Prevailing Academy Preparatory School at Supomu Dunkwa in the Shama District of the Western Region, Isaac Okyere, has been charged with illegal abortion after allegedly impregnating his 17-year-old pupil.

He is also being accused of administering drugs to terminate the pregnancy.

He appeared before the Sekondi Gender-Based Violence Court, presided over by Her Honour Naa Amarley Akowah, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

The accused, a 34-year-old married man, was granted self-recognizance bail in the sum of GHC100,000, and ordered to deposit his passport, school documents, and any travelling documents with the court.

As of the time of filing this report, the suspect had not yet met the bail conditions. The case has since been adjourned to November 25, 2025, as investigations continue.

Facts of the case as presented in court by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector B.P. Ahinsah indicated that the complainant, Hawa Nyankum, is a 56-year-old trader and mother of the 17 year old victim (name witheld).

The victim, who recently completed Junior High School at Prevailing Academy, resides with her parents at Badukrom in the Shama District of the Western Region.

Investigations revealed that the accused has allegedly been engaging in an amorous relationship with the victim, which resulted in pregnancy.

On September 27, 2025, the victim visited a local health facility after feeling unwell and was advised to take a pregnancy test.

Instead of conducting the test at home, the girl sneaked to the accused’s house to inform him, knowing he was responsible for the pregnancy. The headmaster reportedly assisted the girl to do the pregnancy test that eventually proved positive.

The prosecution said the accused subsequently took the victim to a drug store in Takoradi, purchased a drug, and allegedly administered it to her in his house to abort the pregnancy.

He then gave her a sanitary pad and later sent her home.

Upon noticing the pad and suspecting something unusual, the victim’s parents questioned her, leading to a confession.

A report was subsequently lodged with the Sekondi Division of the Domestic Violence and Victim Supoort Unit (DOVSSU) for investigations.

The victim was taken to another Hospital, where a gynecologist, confirmed an incomplete abortion.

The accused initially denied the offence, claiming he only gave GHC400 to one Kwaku Amoah (not his real name), a 17-year-old classmate of the victim, who he claimed impregnated the victim and caused the abortion.

However, police investigations later revealed that the accused had coached and coerced the boy to falsely claim responsibility of the pregnancy.

Subsequent investigations uncovered that the accused had even threatened the boy and made him swear an oath by the Bosompra River deity never to reveal the truth to betray him.

This not withstanding, the frightened boy later confessed to the police and his parents, leading to the re-arrest of the accused. The case remains under investigations.
