The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has issued a stern warning to headteachers across the country not to charge unapproved fees as first- year students report to school.

According to him, “any school head who denies admission to a student placed in their institution or demands unapproved fees will face strict disciplinary action.”

Speaking at the 32nd Annual Conference of Directors of Education in Sunyani, the Minister expressed grave concern over increasing reports that some headteachers are “frustrating the enrollment process for first-year students” and “extorting money from parents and guardians.”

He described such behavior as “completely unacceptable,” adding that it undermines the government’s mission to deliver free and quality education to every Ghanaian child.

“Let me be clear—any student placed in a school through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) must be admitted without any form of discrimination or demand for money beyond the officially approved fees,” Mr Iddrisu stated.

Reaffirming his Ministry’s commitment to discipline, transparency, and fairness, the Minister warned that “any headteacher found guilty of such infractions will be dealt with according to established administrative and legal procedures.”

He also called on Directors of Education nationwide to “intensify monitoring and ensure strict compliance with Ministry directives” in order to facilitate a smooth and equitable enrollment process for all incoming students.

“We will not compromise on access. Every child deserves their right to education—without barriers,” he emphasized.
