Residents of Atimatim Chairman and Bronkong New Site in the Afigya Kwabre South Municipality of the Ashanti Region are facing severe transportation challenges due to a halt in the construction of a bridge for almost a year.

The bridge, whose construction started in 2024, has been left in a state of disrepair, disrupting daily activities, affecting education, businesses, and general commuting.

Community leaders are urging the government to fix the abandoned bridge that connects the two communities.

Despite the community’s efforts to start construction, the project has stalled.

The community had mobilized resources and started building the bridge, with a quarry donating materials to aid completion.

However, their former MP, William Wureku Aidoo, allegedly informed the residents that the road had been given to a contractor, resulting in the confiscation of donated materials.

Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Sir John, on October 29,2025, the Assemblyman for Tebuom Electoral Area, Frank Nayaa Dakurah, expressed his frustration, stating the poor state of the bridge puts their lives at risk during rainy season.

“We face difficulties crossing the bridge with our cocoa bags and other foodstuffs whenever it rains, and our produce often gets damaged”, he lamented.

Despite doing a lot for the country, the community’s bridge remains neglected, making life challenging for them.

He also highlighted the impact on education, stating that students often drop out of school during the rainy season due to the inability to cross the flooded river.

The leaders disclosed that the community is in dire need, especially during the rainy season.

Many people have been swept away by the river over the years, and the bridge’s condition is becoming increasingly hazardous.

They are calling on the government to urgently intervene and construct a safe bridge to prevent further loss of life.

The situation demands immediate attention from the authorities to provide a safe and reliable crossing point for residents.

The Afigya Kwabre South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Patricia Pearl Ankrah, said government would look into the concerns Residents have raised.

She said notwithstanding, the Assembly has officially written to the Department of Urban Roads and other agencies to help address the issue.

She gave strongest indication that a permanent fix would be found in due course for the abandoned bridge.
