The Ashanti Region Poultry Farmers Association has commended the government’s Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti initiative, describing it as a major boost for the local poultry industry.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman, Charles Kingsford Donkor, in an interview with our news team in Kumasi lauded the government for the bold intervention, saying it would help transform the sector and strengthen the country’s food security.
He observed that the initiative offers farmers greater opportunities to expand production while ensuring a more reliable market for their products.
He explained that such support would significantly reduce dependence on imported chicken and improve the livelihoods of thousands of local poultry farmers.
Donkor also expressed excitement over the government’s arrangement with a private company to purchase eggs from farmers. According to him, the guaranteed market is “a huge relief” that will prevent losses and stabilize incomes for poultry producers across the region.
He appealed to the government to impose a ban on the importation of frozen chicken into the country.
“The continuous influx of foreign poultry products is crippling local production and that prohibiting such imports will allow domestic farmers to grow and compete effectively,” he said .
He appealed to the government to reconsider its plan to construct only one major processing plant in Bechem. Instead, he suggested that processing facilities be demarcated across areas such as Ashanti West, Ashanti East, and other zones.
He believed that having multiple plants would ensure operational stability—so that if one plant faces challenges, the others can continue operating smoothly without disrupting the processing chain.
Mr. Donkor urged the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to consider the petition submitted by the Association.
He emphasized that the concerns and needs of farmers who missed out on the first phase of the initiative should be addressed in the second phase next year to ensure fair and inclusive access.
“I’m sure that with multiple processing plants and proper government interventions, the initiative has the potential to boost poultry production, create jobs, and significantly enhance the nation’s agricultural sector.”
