President John Dramani Mahama has said he intends to have a broad-based consultation with the Christian community on the infamous, botched National Cathedral project that has cost the nation millions of dollars with nothing to show for it.
The project, conceived by former President William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a personal promise to God, has cost the nation US$97 million, yet remains incomplete with only a foundation hole.
The issue has sparked intense debate, prompting a forensic audit directed by the President, following the US$97 million expenditure on the project with only foundation holes to show for it.
The previous administration had budgeted a staggering US$400 million to complete the project. But President Mahama says the amount is too excessive, especially when Ghana is battling series of economic challenges.
At a courtesy call on him by the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, President Mahama lamented the US$400 million proposed for the project.
He expressed the need for broader consultation to determine the project’s use, cost, and other aspects, citing Nigeria’s example where a similar edifice was built for US$40 million.
“Let’s find somewhere all of us, on National Day of Thanksgiving and Worship, we can all go there and worship God and thank Him for what He has done for us. When that forensic audit is over, our intention is to have a broad based consultation with the Christian community on how we can build a place that is decent for us to worship.
“But apart from that, make it a centre where people can come and look at its architecture and find Christ as a place in our heart, in our nation, so when the time comes to do that consultation, we’ll decide together, how we want to go forward.”
