Students of Prestea Senior High School in the Western Region have abandoned their classrooms to protest what they describe as the unauthorized use of a road on their campus by members of the Prestea community and its environs.

According to the students, persistent over speeding by vehicles and motorbikes on the campus has led to multiple knockdowns and injuries over the years.

They allege that in many cases, those responsible flee the scene, leaving school authorities to bear the medical costs of the injured students.

According to them, the situation has become unsafe and disruptive to academic work on daily basis.

They are demanding that authorities immediately stop community members from using the campus as a thoroughfare.

The students further claim the community appealed to the school about five years ago to use the campus road temporarily (just three months) while repairs were being made to their main access road.

They, however, say the community has continued to rely on the campus route ever since.

Some students could be seen in videos available, moving desks from their classrooms to block the road.

Others wore red bands to express their frustration.

Police personnel have since arrived on campus to maintain order.

“The community came to plead with the school about five years ago that they wanted to use the campus road for three months to enable them complete a bridge that connects their main road. It’s been five years, and they are still using the campus road. A number of our students have sustained various degrees of injury as a result of knockdowns. The over speeding of vehicles and motorbikes distracts learning activities, and we cannot continue to endure.

We have abandoned our classrooms to embark on a peaceful demonstration to register our anger to the community that enough is enough. They can no longer use our campus as their main road,” the Boys’ Prefect, Abdul Basit, told Connect FM.
