The Kubori Nursing and Midwifery College in the Mamprugu Moagduri District of the North East Region has been hit with a water crisis since its establishment three years ago.

This has worsened living conditions in the College.

The College’s accommodation deficit has also compelled authorities to alternatively accommodate students outside campus to avoid overcrowding in the limited space.

The Kubori Nursing and Midwifery College was established in 2022 to create easy access to nursing and midwifery training for qualified senior high school candidates who couldn’t be placed in other institutions due to the quota system.

The existence of the College has given more opportunities for rural students within the Mamprugu Moagduri District and the North East Region to begin their careers in the health sector.

The most worrying situation confronting the college is access to portable water.

The College’s authorities managed to drill two mechanised boreholes but the water table and water quality is hindering its use.

Students and the kitchen staff relied on other water sources outside the College which comes at a cost. Even getting water in the Kubori community is difficult due to the geological interface of the area and the high-water table is far from the community which will require huge investments to connect to the college.

The Principal of the College, Timothy Duut expressed worry over the water situation and called for immediate intervention.

“So far, we have chalked some successes. We came and met only two structures. Here you can see that the school is developing. This year, the Assembly has promised to complete the hostels for us. If they are able to complete, I think we don’t have much problems on campus with regards to accommodation.

Our main challenge is the water situation. And I can tell you that the College at Management level, has done a lot. We’ve been able to construct two mechanized boreholes, but the two are not enough to cater for the growing population. So,we are calling on the well-resourced NGOs to come to our aid,” he said.

The Assistant Matron, Yakubu Rabiatu, explained the ordeal the kitchen staff goes through getting water to cook for students and staff. She hoped that the situation will end soon.

The District Chief Executive for Mamprugu Moagduri, Abdul Aziz Rahman disclosed plans by the Assembly to solve the water situation in the college and the community.

“The Assembly is much aware of the problem with regards to the water situation. It is not only Kubori. Kubori and its environs. Since we are tackling this accommodation and classroom situation, the Assembly is working tirelessly to see how we can secure a lasting solution to the problem in Kubori. I am not going to promise anything, but I am telling you that the assembly will deliver that project and will make sure that especially the College here, where we receive a lot of visitors from other places, students, teachers, will provide a lasting water solution to this enclave to make sure that students stay comfortable and perform in their exams”, he assured the College.

Aside water, accommodation for students and staff is also a big challenge facing the young college.

Timothy Duut appealed for the continuation of this three-story classroom block and the female hostel which was started by an NGO and the MP.

During the 3rd matriculation of 200 freshers, the Mamprugu Moagduri District Director of Health Services, Kennedy Miah advised and encouraged the matriculants to see the College as a steppingstone to their desire aspirations and take advantage of becoming health professionals to help their communities.

“As you continue with this journey that you’ve embarked on, I want to also reiterate that you are key to Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health’s agenda of ensuring universal health coverage and this has to do with providing services to everyone irrespective of the location of the gender or of the economic status.

Again, we entreat you as you continue on this journey to know that you are not only health workers in the making, but you are also leaders and we entreat you in your academic journey, you are open to taking leadership positions either in your academic lives, your social lives or when it comes to other responsibilities because it’s through this leadership and little responsibilities that you take that will prepare you for the task at (1:13) hand”.

He added, “I would say that your journey to become a health professional has just started. As principal said, it’s going to be a journey of ups and downs, but I’m very confident that with your commitment and with the dedication of our tutors and we in Ghana Health Service, we are confident that together we will be able to produce the next generation of quality human resources to help this country’s reset agenda”.

The College has a population of 600 students offering registered nursing, registered midwifery and registered public health nursing.
