The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with Zoomlion to effectively manage waste in the country.

The Minister says the contribution of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, cannot be overemphasised, when it comes to sanitation in the country.

According to him, although the state ended its contract with the waste management giants to manage waste in the country, the company has established itself to the level where it cannot be sidelined in dealing with waste in the country.

Speaking during the Jospong Group of Companies’ Annual Thanksgiving Service at Adjiringano on Friday, December 12, 2025, the Minister noted that the age-long relationship that has existed between the government and Zoomlion will be deepened.

“Government remains committed to deepen this partnership so that together we can have a Ghana where cleanliness, resilience and job creation become everyday realities and not a distant aspiration,” he stated.

He noted that despite the end of the state’s contract with Zoomlion, the company has established itself as a key player in waste management, stressing the need for the government to continually support its effort to keep the nation clean.

“As Ghanaians say, he who climbs well deserves a push. Dr. Agyepong and his team are climbing well and the whole nation must continue to support and celebrate them.”

In touting the company’s waste management prowess and how it has expanded beyond the jurisdictions of the state, he said: “Jospong has become a true Pan African symbol of innovation, service sustainability, exchange driven leadership, making Ghana proud on every continental and international platform.”

He also averred that the Company’s partnership with the various local assemblies over the years is worth applauding, while reiterating the need for the state to keep up with them to keep Ghana clean and safe.

“As the Minister responsible for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, I fully acknowledge and appreciate Jospong Group’s partnership with local authorities across the 261 MMDAs,” he indicated.

This assurance comes after government discontinued its waste management contract between Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) after the previous one expired.

The contract, which had been in existence since 2006, expired in September 2024 after a six-month extension. President John Dramani Mahama’s administration decided not to renew the contract, citing concerns over exploitation of workers and mismanagement.

Zoomlion clarified that the contract’s expiration doesn’t constitute a termination or cancellation by the government and expressed support for the government’s push towards competitive procurement for future sanitation contracts.

The government also announced plans to audit payments and verify claims related to the expired contract, with Zoomlion pledging full cooperation. The company has also welcomed the government’s intention to improve remuneration for sanitation workers.

The Minister’s comments underscore the government’s recognition of Zoomlion’s role in Ghana’s waste management efforts as the partnership over the years has been instrumental in shaping sanitation policies and practices in the country.
