A flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bryan Abbey Acheampong, has dismissed the assertion that losing candidates stand the chance of winning power when granted multiple chances.

He says the claim is a misapplication of logic with politics and performance, saying those with such notion are misunderstanding history.

He says all past flagbearers who were given multiple chances by the party either performed better than their predecessors or did better in subsequent chances than previous ones.

He believes it will take Dr. Bawumia 16 years in four attempts to win the presidency if his performance is anything to go by.

In an interview on Accra-based JoyNews on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Dr. Acheampong said Dr. Bawumia doesn’t deserve the multiple chances that were given to Kufuor and Akufo-Addo.

“You’re mixing logic with politics and performance,” he said. “It is only logic which will suggest that Adu Boahen went once, Busia went once and won; Kufuor went twice and won; Akufo-Addo went three times and won, and logically, it means that Dr Bawumia will go four times,” he said.

He urged the delegates and party members as a whole to prioritise performance over sentiment as grounded in the NPP’s tradition.

“We’re talking about political performance,” adding in 1996, “Kufuor did better than Adu Boahen so we returned him.”

He said Kufuor won in 2000 and improved on his own performance in 2004, adding that it is the constitutional limit that prevented the party from retaining him in 2008.

The former Minister of Agriculture espoused how the same principle applied to Akufo-Addo, saying “Akufo-Addo did better than Kufuor’s 2004″, getting him retained in 2012 because his numbers improved from 2008.

He said he returned in 2016 and won, stressing, “Akufo-Addo did much better in 2020 than his own results in 2016.”
