Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central region, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called the bluff of those questioning why he convinced delegates in his polity to vote massively for Ken Agyapong.
During the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary on January 31, 2026, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the former Assin Central lawmaker, obtained 644 votes, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, managed some 79 votes.
The results, which many described as shocking, considering the NPP MPs overwhelming support for Dr. Bawumia, generated a conversation over the security of his position as the Minority Leader, after his preferred candidate lost the primary.
Reacting to the development, the legislator explained that Ken Agyapong winning massively in his constituency was expected, considering the support he has given them over the years, which the party leadership in the area is privy to.
According to him, apart from the personal support the MP has given him as a friend, he has been the brain behind some of the monumental projects in his constituency, for which he intends honouring him by naming an ICT project in the constituency after him.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, February 16, 2026, the Minority Leader questioned why Ken Agyapong’s votes in his constituency should be an issue when Dr. Bawumia obtained 100 per cent votes elsewhere.
Afenyo-Markin said the relationship between him and Ken Agyapong goes beyond political colleagues, saying the duo are “more than a family.”
“When my business run down Kennedy gave me a cheque of $5 million. We didn’t sign and agreement. He said ‘go and do your work. I’ve heard that you’re very forceful as a businessman so if you succeed…’. That was the risk he took in me.
“In Winneba, we discussed things openly with the executives. There is an ICT facility that I’m constructing and it’s being named after him. It was conceived some five years ago at Osobonpanyin. The entire constituency know that because of that help he gave to us, I’m sure his own constituents would be jealous that the taxi work and pay didn’t go to Assin.
“Then in 2018, he again guaranteed Suzuki, the small ones for us to have those Suzuki to give to the boys for work and pay. So it’s a relationship we have. So he’s won in Winneba and so what? Why? My friend, the Yagaba Kubore MP, he gave Dr. Bawumia 100%.
“So people should stop it. We’ve moved past that. The man and I, we are more than a family. There is a history to our relationship,” Afenyo-Markin explained.
