Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has opened up on the longstanding relationship between him and former Assin Central lawmaker, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Afenyo-Markin says the relationship between him and the 2028 flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is like that of a family.

His comments come on the back of the massive votes obtained by Ken Agyapong in his constituency, during the NPP’s presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

During the primary, the former Assin Central lawmaker obtained 644 votes in the Effutu constituency, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, managed some 79 votes.

The results, which many described as shocking, considering the NPP MPs overwhelming support for Dr. Bawumia, generated a conversation over the security of his position as the Minority Leader, after his preferred candidate lost the primary.

But according to the MP, Ken Agyapong has been like a brother to him, supporting him without recourse to what it would cost him.

“When my business run down Kennedy gave me a cheque of $5 million. We didn’t sign and agreement. He said ‘go and do your work. I’ve heard that you’re very forceful as a businessman so if you succeed…’. That was the risk he took in me,” he said in a Channel One TV interview on Monday, February 16, 2026.

Afenyo-Markin also explained that the former Assin Central MP was behind some of the monumental projects in his constituency, something he said he could not overlook at the primary.

Ken Agyapong’s support, he indicated, is known to the party leadership, which he says influenced their decision to vote for him.

“In Winneba, we discussed things openly with the executives. There is an ICT facility that I’m constructing and it’s being named after him. It was conceived some five years ago at Osobonpanyin.

“The entire constituency know that because of that help he gave to us, I’m sure his own constituents would be jealous that the taxi work and pay didn’t go to Assin. Then in 2018, he again guaranteed Suzuki, the small ones for us to have those Suzuki to give to the boys for work and pay,” he explained, questioning why people are making a fuss about the votes he got in his constituency, while Dr. Bawumia obtained 100 per cent elsewhere.

According to him, the two are related like families, and there is a history to that, the reason the reason his support for him shouldn’t surprise people.

“…so it’s a relationship we have. So he’s won in Winneba and so what? Why? My friend, the Yagaba Kubore MP, he gave Dr. Bawumia 100%. So people should stop it. We’ve moved past that. The man and I, we are more than a family. There is a history to our relationship,” he disclosed.
