The Management and Board of Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has announced to the general public, stakeholders and visitors the temporary closure of some five forts ahead of the Christmas festivities.

The closure takes effect from Thursday, December 18, 2025 until further notice.

The Forts include; Fort Apollonia (Benyin), Fort St. Anthony (Axim), Fort Orange (Sekondi), James Fort (Jamestown) and Ussher Fort (Ussher town).

A statement issued on December 19, 2025 by the Acting Executive Director of GMMB, Kwesi Essel-Blankson noted that the decision has been taken to allow for essential maintenance work, safety assessments and ongoing conservation activities aimed at preserving the structural integrity and historical value of these significant heritage sites.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the public as we work to ensure that the Forts are made safe for continued public access,” the statement noted.

GMMB noted that further updates will be communicated in due course.
