Three-time African champions Nigeria missed out on a final berth in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) losing again to a host nation.

Nigeria had lost the 2023 AFCON final 1-2 to La Cote d’Ivoire despite scoring the first goal in the game.

They came up against Morocco on Wednesday in the second semi-final clash of the ongoing tournament.

After 120 minutes without any goals, the match had to be decided on penalties.

Nigeria missed two of their kicks while Morocco scored four of theirs, missing only one, to make it past the West African giants.

The Atlas Lions will, therefore, play in Sunday’s final, the first in 22 years.

They will play against the Teranga Lions of Senegal, who are playing in their third final in five years.

Nigeria and Egypt will battle for the Bronze medal.
