Legendary Ivorian footballer Didier Drogba has condemned the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, describing it as a blow to the credibility and dignity of African football.
In a passionate statement, Drogba pointed out how “we all watched Senegal fight bravely and defeat Morocco in a historic final”.
“But now, months later, a decision made in a boardroom has changed that story. The CAF Appeals Committee has overturned the result… and suddenly, a victory won on the pitch has been stolen,” he stated.
Drogba emphasized that the decision undermines African football’s reputation, saying, “This isn’t just about one trophy. It’s about the credibility, dignity, and spirit of African football.”
He urged unity among stakeholders to restore confidence in the sport, adding, “Africa is not small. Africa has produced giants—players who conquered Europe and inspired millions.”
The football icon called for leadership that prioritizes transparency, trust, and stability, suggesting the matter could be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if necessary.
“We must not allow ambiguity and politics to steal the joy of victory from our people,” he said.
Drogba’s comments reflect the outrage and disappointment among African football fans and stakeholders, who fear the decision damages the sport’s image and undermines its growth.
