The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspected street robbers following an intelligence-led patrol operation at Dzorwulu in Accra.
According to a press release issued by the Accra Regional Police Command, the suspects were arrested by officers of the Kotobabi District Police Command after they were spotted riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike during a routine patrol on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
The suspects have been identified as Stephen Gletsu, 37, who was riding the motorbike, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, the pillion rider. Police said both suspects were dressed in all-black attire with black helmets, and the pillion rider was seen wielding a cutlass.
Upon noticing the patrol team, the suspects reportedly sped off, leading to a chase. During the pursuit, warning shots were fired, causing the suspects to lose control of the motorbike and fall near Roman Ridge, close to the Nigerian High Commission. They attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by the police.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of several items, including multiple mobile phones — among them iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, Samsung A21, Infinix phones, Nokia and Itel feature phones — as well as a necklace, cash amounting to GH¢2,690.00, and two US dollars.
The police noted that the suspects sustained varying degrees of injuries during the arrest and were treated at the Police Hospital before being discharged.
During interrogation, the suspects admitted to committing the robbery and confessed to attacking and robbing several unsuspecting victims within the Accra Metropolis.
Statements have since been obtained from victims who identified both the suspects and their stolen mobile phones. The victims recounted being attacked with a machete and robbed of their phones, money, and other valuables.
The suspects have been remanded into police custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Further police operations have led to the arrest of four additional accomplices who are currently assisting investigators. The suspects have been arraigned before court and are expected to reappear on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating street robbery and ensuring the safety and security of residents within the metropolis.
