Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Department of Political Science, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has urged certain elements within the Ayawaso East constituency to allow internal structures in the NDC to work.
His comments follow calls by some influential persons in the community for the NDC leadership to allow Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed contest the upcoming parliamentary by-election as the party’s validly elected candidate.
Following the election of Jamal in the party’s primary on Saturday, February 7, 2026, issues of bribery and vote-buying became rife with evidence on both social and traditional media, leading to the Majority caucus in Parliament calling for the annulment of the results.
The party condemned the act and set up a committee to probe the alleged incidents. This is what some people in the constituency have kicked against, saying Baba Jamal should be cleared to contest the by-election since he emerged winner of the primary.
Reacting to the development, Dr Asah-Asante urged those kicking against the probe to allow the party’s internal structures deal with the issue to clear any allegations around the entire election.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Monday, February 9, 2026, the political scientist noted that the outcome of the probe, either positive or negative, will be in the interest of the party.
He argued that the citizenry has the right to know what prevailed in the primary, and the party’s decision to investigate to bring out the truth is the right thing to do, saying it will bolster the NDC’s chances in the polity.
“Democracy is anchored on rule of law so if there is an issue that the public want to know, remember the public has the right to know and we want to know, it is fair and proper to allow them to go through the process so that at the end of the day, you know what has transpired. That will even strengthen their hand in the constituency.
“We have the right person to lead us. Even though there were allegations against this person, this is what the outcome is. It can be positive or negative but they should be able to take it to their strides and move on, other than that, they are going to stampede the work of the political party which is not the right thing to do,” Dr. Asah-Asante explained.
Meanwhile, the committee is expected to submit its report today, Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
