The First Lady, Lordina Dramani Mahama, has expressed the need to prioritise women empowerment, stressing an economic empowered woman is beneficial to the entire society.
She says the role of women in society makes it economically prudent for them to be granted the needed support to build resilient societies.
Addressing fellow First Ladies at the 30th Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) Summit in Addis Ababa on Sunday, February 15, 2026, Mrs Mahama pledged her commitment to the Organisation’s vision of women empowerment.
“I am fully committed to supporting OAFLAD’s #BuildingResilience Campaign, with a special focus on access to health, education and women’s empowerment,” she said in a Facebook post made after her address.
According to her, “when women and children are healthy, families are stronger and nations thrive.”
She explained how she is driving the campaign in Ghana with her foundation, particularly in the health sector.
“Among others, the Lordina Foundation provides free health screenings and treatment to thousands of women, children, and the elderly, and has built three modern maternity and children’s wards at Bole District Hospital, Nkoranza Municipal Hospital, and Bodom Health Centre, with another facility nearing completion in Asukawkaw.”
The First Lady also outlined the prospects for 2026, aiming to boost Ghanaian women’s economic viability through initiatives like the Women’s Development Bank and 24-Hour Economy.
“Looking ahead to 2026, we will continue to empower women in small and medium-sized businesses, aligning with government initiatives, including the 24-Hour Economy and the new Women’s Development Bank. When we empower a woman economically, we empower an entire family and uplift an entire community,” she stated.
In building the capacity of women through education, which she says unlocks potential, Mrs Mahama said “we are proudly supporting 40 underprivileged JHS girls through the Merck Foundation ‘Educating Linda’ Scholarship Programme. Every girl we support becomes a leader, a change-maker, and a nation-builder.”
