President John Mahama has left Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after participating in the 39th AU Summit.

While in Addis Ababa, the President addressed numerous side events.

He also commissioned a new chancery for Ghana’s Embassy in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

This new edifice marks a significant step in strengthening Ghana’s diplomatic presence on the continent.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a post on his Facebook on Monday, February 16, 2026, described the edifice as more than just an office complex.

According to him, it represents the country’s firm belief in multilateralism, and also exemplifies Ghana’s commitment to the vision of the African Union.

He also noted that the commissioning of the new chancery also reflects Ghana’s resolve to deepen bilateral relations with Ethiopia and signals President Mahama’s readiness to assume the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.

The project, which spans a decade, dates back to 2016 when funding was secured under the SG-SSB facility. Construction later stalled due to economic challenges before the current administration resumed work and settled outstanding Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs) in 2025.
