The Ministry of Education has issued a strong warning that assaults on teachers will attract “severe consequences” under the laws of Ghana, following a series of violent incidents in schools across the country.
In a press statement dated February 19, the Ministry said it notes “with grave concern” reported cases of students attacking teachers and other related acts of violence.
“The Ministry takes strong exception to these developments and is resolved to nip this in the bud,” the statement signed by Deputy Minister, Dr Clement Apaak said. It stressed that “any individual, including students, who assaults a teacher in the lawful performance of their professional duties will face severe consequences in accordance with the laws of Ghana.”
Arrests and Convictions in Kade
The Ministry cited a recent case where students were prosecuted for assaulting a tutor. According to the statement, the perpetrators were arrested and arraigned.
“The accused persons pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy and assault. They have been convicted and fined,” the Ministry confirmed.
Incidents at Sports Competition and WAEC School
The Ministry also condemned misconduct during the Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region, which reportedly involved a stabbing and an alleged sexual assault.
“The perpetrators have been arrested and since been in police custody, assisting with investigations,” the statement said, adding that victims are receiving medical and psychosocial support from the appropriate authorities.
In a separate incident two students and an accomplice have been arraigned over the alleged assault of a teacher. The accused persons have been remanded into police custody for six weeks pending further proceedings.
President Reaffirms Zero Tolerance
At the 54th Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President John Mahama reiterated the government’s stance against attacks on teachers.
According to the Ministry, the President “reaffirmed that no attack on teachers will be tolerated under any circumstance” and pledged the government’s commitment to protecting teachers and ensuring perpetrators are dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Ministry said it fully aligns with the President’s position and will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to ensure justice is served.
“The Ministry is not just condemning the violent behaviours but is also taking steps to demand justice for victims through the court system,” the statement added.
