The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has dismissed reports that the Majority Caucus in Parliament offered a cash donation to Hajia Amina Mahama prior to the party’s Ayawaso East primary.
Few days to the Ayawaso East primary, some members of the Majority Caucus presented one hundred thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢100,000) to the wife, Hajia Amina Mahama and children of the late Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Mahama Naser Toure.
The money was to reportedly aid her in the campaign ahead of the election.
Speaking on the matter on TV3’s Hot Issues, Fifi Kwetey suggested that the gesture may have been initiated by a few MPs rather than the Majority caucus as a whole.
“I am not sure about the Majority leadership as a whole. I think it is individuals, and those individuals portrayed that they were representing the Majority as a whole,” he stated on February 15.
According to him, some key figures within the Majority leadership, including the Majority Leader and the Majority Chief Whip, were unaware of the donation.
“Speaking to some of the key leaders like the Majority Leader and Majority Chief Whip, they clearly did not know anything about this particular donation,” he said, adding that the action must have been orchestrated by a few persons who created the impression that they were acting on behalf of the entire caucus.
Mr. Kwetey acknowledged that Hajia Aminu Mahama’s recent bereavement could have drawn sympathy from some individuals.
“She lost her husband, so naturally you will have people who will have that kind of sympathy,” he noted.
However, he stressed that at the party level, decisions are taken based on established principles and not favouritism.
“At the party level, there was no such [decision]; we took our decision purely based on what ought to be,” he added.
