Residents of Bibiani in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality joined the nation in celebrating Ghana’s 69th Independence Day, emphasizing development, environmental conservation, and support for cocoa farmers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Member of Parliament for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo, said the municipality continues to leverage the national celebration to promote tourism, culture, youth empowerment, and local economic growth.
He described Bibiani as the “undisputed gateway” to the Western North Region, highlighting its strategic location and rich cultural heritage as key drivers for investment and opportunity.

The MP acknowledged the critical role of cocoa farmers in sustaining the local economy. While recent fluctuations in global cocoa prices have posed challenges, he assured that the government, through the Ghana Cocoa Board, is implementing reforms to enhance transparency, strengthen farmer support, and improve returns. He urged farmers to remain confident as these reforms take effect.

Addressing concerns over illegal mining, Mr. Asamoah Brefo noted that while mining is an important economic activity, unlawful operations continue to damage rivers, farmlands, and forests.
He said government agencies, in collaboration with security forces and the Minerals Commission, have intensified enforcement, seizing illegal equipment, prosecuting offenders, and implementing land reclamation programs.

He further explained that efforts are ongoing to formalize small-scale mining and educate miners on responsible and environmentally sustainable practices.
Stressing that the crackdown is not against youth livelihoods, the MP called on residents to support these initiatives and prioritize sustainable development over short-term gains.
