Residents and businesses in the Tamale Metropolis are expressing frustration over persistent power fluctuations that have disrupted livelihoods and daily activities.

From food vendors struggling to preserve goods to small-scale businesses incurring losses, the impact of the unstable electricity supply is being widely felt across communities.

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has now admitted that the situation has worsened in recent weeks, offering an unqualified apology to affected customers.

At a media engagement, the Corporate Communication Manager of NEDCo for the Northern Region, Maxwell Kotoka noted that the challenge is not due to power generation by the Volta River Authority or supply from Independent Power Producers, nor is it linked to transmission by the Ghana Grid Company.

Instead, he attributes the situation to internal distribution challenges, including overloaded transformers, outdated infrastructure, and increasing demand especially during the current hot season.

The company also cited illegal interference by some residents who tamper with power phases, contributing to system imbalances and low voltage in affected areas.

To address the issue, NEDCo says it has deployed additional fault response teams, extended working hours, and improved its complaint response systems.

as part of efforts to address persistent power challenges in the Tamale Metropolis and surrounding areas, NEDCo is expecting the delivery of 500 transformers from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to ease pressure on the system.

Although the transformers are yet to arrive, NEDCo says it expects the first batch within the next two weeks.

Management says it has already begun installing additional transformers in some areas, while the expected supply from the Ministry will further accelerate improvements.

NEDCo also plans to intensify public education and stakeholder engagement to curb illegal activities on the network, warning that sanctions may be introduced if such practices continue.

The company has assured customers of its commitment to restoring stable and reliable power supply in the Tamale Metropolis.
