The Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) Special Operations Team has arrested two people during a night patrol exercise for possessing narcotics in the Tamale metropolis.
The operation forms part of a two-week intensive security crackdown targeting hotspots where criminals and suspected drug cartels continue to threaten the safety of residents.
The operation happens a day after the police raided the hideout of a discreet drug distribution syndicate known as the ‘aluta boys’ at changli in the Tamale Metropolis.
The IGP Special Operations Team on Sunday, November 23, 2025, embarked on a comprehensive night patrol across major communities in the Tamale Metropolis, aimed at tackling drug peddling, robbery, and other criminal activities.
The exercise began with a duty parade where personnel were briefed and reminded to uphold professionalism and teamwork throughout the operation.
Their first stop was the Tamale Taxi Rank, once notorious for open drug peddling. But sustained police presence appears to be paying off as no drug activity was recorded.
A subsequent stop-and-search operation yielded two arrests, Oluu Kasi, picked up for possessing a jackknife at odd hour while Mohammed Salim, arrested with dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
The team proceeded to the Aluta Boys enclave at Changli, previously known for narcotic activities. However, no suspects were found.
Further rounds at Vittin, the Ganaa Hotel enclave, Kapagyili, Lamashegu, and the Aboabo Market recorded no arrests, although these areas are classified as hotspots.
A snap checkpoint mounted on the Vittin–Yendi highway saw motorists screened for drugs and weapons, but no illegal items were retrieved.
The arrested suspects were later handed over to the Sakasaka Police Station for detention and further investigations. Exhibits retrieved were also forwarded for forensic analysis.
With intelligence-led operations and heightened visibility patrols, the team continues to rebuild public confidence while reinforcing efforts to keep the Tamale Metropolis and its surrounding areas safe.
