The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has welcomed government’s recent intervention to reduce fuel costs, describing it as a timely move that has eased pressure on transport operators.
The Head of Industrial Relations of GPRU, Alhaji Abass Imoro, in an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Wednesday, April 15 indicated that the union had been considering an increase in transport fares due to rising operational costs, particularly fuel.
However, he said the government’s intervention has brought relief to operators, prompting the union to hold off on any immediate fare increment.
“We thank God for Government living up to expectations. We were to increase fares due to our condition on fuel and other items we use to run transport.
“Today’s announcement, we are happy,” he stated.
According to him, the GPRTU will monitor the situation over the next two fuel pricing windows before taking any further decision on transport fares.
“We have also started talking to our people, all of us should make sure that we study this for two fuel pricing windows for now,” he stressed.
He added that while the current measures are encouraging, transport operators are hopeful that government will sustain and further reduce fuel prices to further ease their operational burden.
“For now, we are happy with the current reduction or intervention by government…if government can study and make sure there is a further deduction in fuel prices for us, we will be very happy,” Abass Imoro noted.
Mr. Imoro emphasised that continued fuel price stability would help maintain current fares and provide relief to both operators and commuters.
