On Thursday, May 21, Parliament commenced the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, welcomed all the Members of Parliament from recess and read several messages from the President to the House, indicating his absence from the country in accordance with Standing Order 51.
In his remarks, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, urged Members of Parliament to work together in the national interest, stressing the need for economic discipline, job creation, and effective oversight.
He , recent improvements in press freedom rankings, and ongoing economic reforms following the country’s exit from the IMF programme.
He also outlined a busy legislative agenda, including 48 Bills, 26 instruments, and major committee work, and called for stricter oversight to curb smuggling and improve public spending efficiency.
The Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei on behalf of the Caucus, raised concerns over economic hardship, electricity power cuts “dumsor,” governance challenges, and public confidence in state institutions, including the Bank of Ghana.
The Minority also called for investigations into key national issues such as the Damang Mine transaction and sports administration matters.
