The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has called on the Greater Accra Regional Minister to take immediate steps to shut down the growing livestock market operating at Kanda near the National Mosque.
According to the Committee, the sale of cattle, goats and other animals in the area is creating serious sanitation and environmental concerns while tarnishing the image of the national capital.
Speaking during a PAC sitting on Thursday, May 21, Vice Chairman of the Committee, Davis Opoku Ansah, criticised authorities for allowing the business to expand despite ongoing concerns about the beautification and management of Accra.
“We have our National Mosque from the Kawukudi stretch to the Flagstaff House area looking like a cow-selling centre,” he lamented.
He noted that the situation has worsened significantly over time, explaining that what initially started with a few cattle traders has now developed into a large livestock market with over a hundred cattle, goats and even camels being sold openly.
“At first, it was just about five to six cows, now you go there and you see over hundred cattles. Now, they are selling goats and even camels. In fact, this week when I passed there, I saw them even selling camels,” he stated.
The lawmaker questioned what action the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and the Ministry had taken to address the issue, especially considering previous government efforts and investments aimed at beautifying the capital.
“We have spent monies, even at a point we had a Ministry in charge of the beautification of Accra, and we are all looking on allowing this business to grow,” he added.
The Committee is demanding urgent intervention to restore order and improve sanitation in the area.
