The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has said government is currently recruiting some seven thousand teachers and three thousand lecturers to address the country’s national deficit.

He says efforts are being made for secure financial clearance to recruit more teac hers to fill the gap.

According to him, Ghana needs a minimum of 50, 000 teachers nationwide, a number he noted is subject to government’s budget and ability to accommodate these teachers.

“Mr. Speaker, currently we are undertaking some recruitment of about 7000 teachers across the country. And for the Tertiary Education level, close to 3000 lecturers to be able to fill in the gap.

“But if you do a national assessment of our needs, we need a minimum of 50,000 teachers across the country but that is subject to budget and the budget being able to absorb that,” he stated.

Answering questions in Parliament on Friday, May 29, 2026, he cited a case in the Prestea Huni-Valley where several classrooms are currently being handled by 176 teachers whose salaries are being paid by parents.

Haruna Iddrisu also announced that a new batch of recruited teachers is expected to commence work on July 1, 2026.
