Some road transport operators have dismissed a 20% transportation fare increment circulating on social and mainstream media, describing the claims as false.
The operators, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), in a joint press statement on Monday, June 1, 2026, clarified that no such adjustment has been approved.
The statement has urged the public to disregard the reports of the fare hike with the “contempt it deserves”.
General Secretaries of GPRTU and GRTCC, Godfred Abulbire and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, signing the statement, indicated that road transport operators are actively monitoring the current fuel pricing window and would make necessary reviews, through due process, if needed adding that the public would be officially informed of any increments.
It continued that the supposed increment did not pass through due process since there hasn’t been any discussions with the Ministry of Transport or followed the established fare adjustment protocols agreed upon between the Ministry and the recognised transport operators.
All transport unions, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers, and allied stakeholders, have since been advised by the statement to strictly maintain existing approved fares.
Meanwhile, leadership of all the stakeholders have been advised to refrain from implementing any unilateral fare increases until further notice.
