The Bono Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into the suspected murder of an 87-year-old retired veterinary officer, Alhaji Abdulai Toure, whose body was discovered near the public cemetery at Sampa in the Jaman North District.
According to the police, a report was received on June 1, 2026, at about 1:00 p.m. indicating that an elderly man had been found dead at New Japan, a suburb of Sampa.
Officers who proceeded to the scene found the deceased lying face down near the cemetery. He was dressed in blue-and-white striped lace clothing and wore a wristwatch but was barefoot.
Preliminary examinati on revealed multiple gunshot wounds on the body.
According to a statement issued by the Police on June 3, investigations established that prior to his death, Alhaji Toure had reported an incident in which unknown persons allegedly set his house and Opel Kadett vehicle ablaze at Sampa.
After making the report, the deceased reportedly boarded a passenger bus with registration number AS 9859-14 at the local lorry station, intending to travel to Berekum.
However, police say the journey was interrupted when the driver stopped at a nearby vulcanising shop to inflate a tyre. At that point, four young men identified only as Abode, Mepawokyew, Alaska and Baala allegedly boarded the vehicle, forcibly removed the deceased and pushed him into a waiting tricycle, popularly known as a “pragya.”
The suspects then reportedly transported him towards the cemetery area along the Kokoa Road.
A thorough search of the crime scene led to the recovery of five spent AAA cartridge casings and three spent BBB cartridge casings, strengthening suspicions that the victim was shot and killed near the bushes where his body was later discovered.
The body has been deposited at the Sampa Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Meanwhile, a 45-year-old farmer, Siaka Yahaya, has identified the deceased as his stepfather.
Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the suspects to assist with investigations and face prosecution.
The Bono Regional Police Command has appealed to members of the public with credible information to come forward and assist law enforcement agencies in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Authorities have assured residents that they remain committed to maintaining peace and security in the area while investigations continue.
