The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported a series of emergency responses across parts of the Greater Accra Region following Wednesday’s heavy rainfall, which triggered flooding and several fire outbreaks.
According to the Service in a Facebook post on Thursday, June 4, firefighters carried out successful rescue operations and contained multiple fires, preventing casualties and further damage to properties.
One of the incidents occurred at Oyarifa at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3 when personnel from the Madina Fire Station responded to a fire involving an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meter board within a residential facility.
The blaze was brought under control by 6:20 p.m., with no injuries or fatalities recorded.
Shortly afterwards, firefighters from the same station responded to two separate flood emergencies at Oyarifa KB Junction and Old Ashongman near Bohye Church.
A total of nine people who had become trapped by rising floodwaters were successfully rescued without injury.
Later in the evening, at about 9:49 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to the Kanda Post Office area, where underground cables behind a self-contained residential facility had caught fire.
The blaze was swiftly contained and no casualties were reported. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
Firefighters from the Accra City Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to a heavy fire outbreak at Accra Water Works, opposite the Accra Central Police Station, following a distress call received at 2005 hours.
The first crew arrived at 8:47 pm to find the fire fully developed. Reinforcements from the Ministries, Parliament, Industrial Area, and Circle Fire Stations, with support from a water tanker from the Assembly, were deployed to support firefighting operations.
The fire was confined at 10:29 pm, brought under control at 11:50 pm and fully extinguished at 3:41 am on Thursday.
The fire extensively damaged the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex, destroying thirty-two (32) rooms and their contents, as well as a one-storey building and its contents. One firefighter was also injured.
In the early hours of Thursday, firefighters attended another incident at Makola involving a shop located opposite the Accra City Fire Station.
Upon arrival at about 12:50 a.m., the fire had already been extinguished. However, some items in the shop sustained partial damage. The cause of the outbreak is under investigation.
At approximately 1:56 a.m. on Thursday, firefighters from the Trade Fair Fire Station responded to a fire at the Nungua Cold Store area near the police station.
The incident affected a residential structure, partially burning a single room and a porch used as a kitchen, along with their contents. No casualties were recorded, and investigators are yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Another fire incident was reported at Kuntense Satellite at about 4:03 a.m. on Thursday. Personnel from the Amasaman Fire Station responded to a blaze involving an ECG utility pole fitted with electricity meters.
The meters were completely destroyed by the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
The Ghana National Fire Service has urged the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season and to promptly report emergencies to enable swift intervention by emergency responders.
The Service also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through rapid response and effective emergency management operations.
