Fire has destroyed parts of the female students’ dormitories at the Government Secretarial School in Sekondi, leaving one student injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 09:30 GMT on June 13, affecting two dormitories on the top floor housing 20 female nursing trainee students.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is reported to have responded swiftly to the emergency, arriving at the scene at about 09:37 GMT.
The firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and fully extinguish it by 10:25 GMT.
Despite the rapid response, the fire caused extensive damage to students’ belongings and school property, with losses estimated to run into hundreds of thousands of cedis. Items in the affected rooms were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
One female student sustained burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the emergency unit of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
Authorities say the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, with investigations ongoing.
The National Disaster Management Organisation has confirmed the incident. Sekondi Takoradi NADMO Director Alhaji Abubakar Kamal described the situation as unfortunate, noting that assessments are underway to determine the full extent of damage and support required.
Officials have assured that a full investigation will be conducted to establish the cause of the fire and prevent future occurrences.
