The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has commended AT Ghana (formerly AirtelTigo), a wholly owned government telecommunications company for its timely support to Ghanaian returnees from South Africa through the provision of free SIM cards loaded with airtime and data.

The Minister also lauded AT Ghana for its commitment to creating employment opportunities for some of the returnees.

The intervention by AT Ghana forms part of ongoing efforts to help returning Ghanaians reconnect with their families, friends, and loved ones immediately upon arrival while supporting their smooth reintegration into society.

Speaking during the reception of the returnees, Mr Ablakwa expressed appreciation to the telecommunications company for going beyond connectivity support to offer hope and opportunities to those seeking to rebuild their lives.

“I want to also thank AirtelTigo. They have reached out that they have some jobs to offer. They are partnering with government to ensure that our compatriots are fully reintegrated and supported as they begin a new chapter back home,” the Minister noted.

The Minister described AT Ghana’s gesture as a shining example of how corporate Ghana can complement government efforts in addressing the challenges faced by returning citizens.

AT Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Leo Skarlatos, said the company is honoured to support the initiative, stressing that staying connected is often the first step towards rebuilding lives and restoring confidence.

“At AT Ghana, we believe connectivity is more than a service; it is a lifeline. By providing free SIM cards with airtime and data, we are helping returnees reconnect with the people who matter most. Our commitment, however, goes beyond connectivity. We are also exploring employment opportunities because successful reintegration requires both communication and economic empowerment. As a proudly Ghanaian company, we are committed to supporting our fellow citizens when they need us most,” Mr. Skarlatos said.

The free SIM cards, preloaded with airtime and data, enabled returnees to immediately contact relatives and access essential services upon their arrival in Ghana.

AT Ghana’s support has been widely praised as a meaningful contribution to the national reintegration programme, demonstrating the company’s commitment to social impact and nation-building.

As Ghana continues to welcome its citizens home, partnerships between government and responsible corporate institutions such as AT Ghana remain critical in ensuring that returnees receive the support and opportunities needed to successfully rebuild their lives.
