The Minority has accused Government of contempt of court, alleging that it delayed the custodial sentence of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu and took her into prison custody on June 24, 2026, 15 days after she was extradited to Ghana.
This claim contradicts earlier announcement by Minister for Government Communications who stated that the former MASLOC Chief Executive had been in custody just after her extradition.
But a member of the Legal Affairs Committee, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, argued that Sedina did not begin serving her 10-year prison sentence right after she arrived in Ghana on June 9 until yesterday (June 24) after a public demand for her whereabouts.
“We can categorically state that until yesterday June 24, Madam Sedina Tamakloe was not in prison custody. And so from June 9 that she arrived to June 24, she was not in prison custody. 15 clear days.
“Yesterday, June 24 when she was admitted into prison custody, that was when the Interior Minister came out. It is only because of the public pressure that the government has decided to deliver her into prison custody.,” he stated at a press conference in Parliament on June 25, 2026.
The Minority further claimed that they have gathered intelligence suggesting that government intends to overturn the sentence.
“We can again confirm that she is in the female prison of a medium prison installation. Our intelligence is that she went in under protest because her assurance was that they were not going to have her go into prison custody and that they were going to work around the clock to have the decision overturned, so that she will have her liberty,” he added.
Although government is yet to respond to these claims, the Manhyia South Legislator noted that they are investigating an appeal she has filed due to doubts surrounding the timing of it.
“Another assurance she has been given is that, they are going to work around the clock to have the decision overturned.
“We are going to keep an eye on the matter. We are also conducting investigations into the circumstances of her appeal because there are doubts of the timing of the appeal,” he remarked.
Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu returned to Ghana from the United States to begin serving a prison sentence following a successful extradition process initiated by the Government of Ghana.
Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that officials of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service have since taken her into custody and are making the necessary arrangements for her to begin serving her sentence.
She arrived in the country on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
In 2024, an Accra High Court handed Attionu a 10-year prison sentence with hard labour after finding her guilty of causing financial loss to the state.
Sedina Attionu had initially been granted permission by the High Court in 2021 to travel to the United States for medical treatment while her trial was ongoing.
However, she failed to return to Ghana to continue participating in the proceedings, prompting the court to continue the trial in her absence.
The conviction followed revelations of the misapplication of millions of Ghana cedis intended to support small businesses under MASLOC. She was also found guilty on counts including stealing and money laundering. Businessman Daniel Axim was convicted alongside her.
Attionu was convicted in absentia by an Accra High Court after she failed to appear before the court during proceedings related to alleged financial irregularities at MASLOC during her tenure as Chief Executive Officer.
