Dennis Miracles Aboagye, former Presidential Staffer and spokesperson of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has told President John Dramani Mahama that Ghanaians need a solution to the flooding crisis.
He makes the point that the floods are wiping away the capital city. He says not just a few but the entire city is under siege.
Every day of rain in Accra sees a new neighbourhood flooding in addition to the existing list, he said.
His comments come at a time when President Mahama had said that one of the reasons attributed to the devastating floods in Ghana is the issue of human behaviour.
The President said that the irresponsible actions of a few individuals end up putting entire communities at risk.
Speaking after a tour of flood-affected areas on Monday, 29 June, he said, “There is the issue of human behaviour. Whenever government begins removing structures built in waterways, some people accuse us of being inhumane. Yet when disasters such as today’s flooding occur, the consequences affect everyone. The irresponsible actions of a few individuals end up putting entire communities at risk.”
In a statement on his Facebook page, Miracles Aboagye said that “solutions, that’s what we need now, sir, not assurances, not commiserations, not empathy.”
“The rains haven’t even started yet. It’s just about to start. So let’s save the speeches and the empathy messages. We will hear and listen to those after the rains have passed and we are done counting the losses, the human and asset losses.”
Below is his full statement…
Mr. President was in the air yesterday checking on us and verifying whether indeed, we have been flooded the way he was seeing and reading in the news. Fair deal!!!
But today is Tuesday; it’s the day after the chopper trip….and the clouds are still gathering. Looks even more darker, angrier and gloomier than it looked on Saturday night.
Dear Mr. President, can we know the time for the emergency cabinet meeting today? To take specific, clear cut decisions in ensuring the rains coming today and the day after today will not take our lives away like you saw from the air…
Mr. P, can you kindly describe what you saw from the chopper and based on the brief you have received from the anti-flood technical committee, what their solutions are in ensuring we would not lose our lives again in the coming days.
Mr. P, the floods are wiping away the capital city, not just a few, the entire city is under siege. If they briefed you well, they would have told you that, every day of rain in Accra, sees a new neighbourhood flooding in addition to the existing list. Every additional hour of flood moves the flood to another neighborhood. The most “A list” Neighbourhood are all flooding. Everything in your capital is under siege. So we need ANSWERS!!
SOLUTIONS, that’s what we need now sir, not assurances, not commiserations, not empathy. SOLUTIONS!
You know why?? The rains haven’t even started yet. It’s just about to start. So let’s save the speeches and the empathy messages. We will hear and listen to those after the rains have passed and we are done counting the losses. The human and asset losses.
It’s 8am sir, the clouds are angrily gathering and some of us are scared, so scared we are wondering where we can hide.
CAN YOU KINDLY SIR, TELL US WHAT YOUR SOLUTION IS!!!
Tell us what you are going to do to protect us today not the future. Today’s rain must be survived first!!
I wait to hear from you Mr. P. Hopefully, before today’s rains also starts.
Hopefully, you didn’t just come to check how many few died against the previous years but truly have a solution for us.
I AM NERVOUS SIR!! Seeing the clouds gather !!!
