Parliament has passed a bill to establish a National Defence University to coordinate tertiary-level military institutions under a single authority, with autonomy to award certificates, diplomas and degrees.

The National Defence University Bill seeks to provide a legal framework for the establishment of the National Defence University as an autonomous degree-awarding institution dedicated to defence, security and strategic studies.

The law will enable the university to supervise, regulate and maintain consistent academic standards across defence training institutions while awarding its own certificates, diplomas and degrees.

The Bill is also intended to strengthen Ghana’s capacity to train military personnel, security officers and public sector professionals to respond to evolving national and global security challenges.

By creating a central hub for teaching, research and professional development, the university is expected to promote high-quality defence education, enhance leadership development and foster collaboration among the Ghana Armed Forces, other security agencies and international partners.
