Ebo Buckman, Deputy Communications Director of the United Party has raised doubts about the success of the Attorney-General’s appeal against the acquittal of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.
Mr. Buckman said the state faces a difficult task at the Supreme Court.
Speaking on TV3 New Day’s the Big Issue, Buckman said after reading of the Court of Appeal’s judgement, he presumes there is less likelihood for the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling.
“Let me tell you my candid opinion on this decision of the Attorney-General. After reading the judgment, it will be very difficult for them to succeed at the Supreme Court,” he said.
Buckman suggested the A-G’s decision to appeal may have been influenced more by public pressure than by the legal merits of the case.
“I want to believe that he is doing that because of pressure and public opinion and all the kind of things people are saying,” he stated.
According to him, a proper legal assessment of the Court of Appeal’s judgement reveals little basis for challenging the ruling at the Supreme Court.
“Ordinarily, if you read the judgment through the lens of the law, it will be difficult to find fault with the ruling,” he argued.
He urged the public to respect the judicial process and allow the law to take its course.
“We should allow the laws to work,” he concluded.
The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has filed for Stay of Execution against the Appeal Court’s judgement in favour of former CEO of MASLOC, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.
The Appeal Court acquitted and discharged Madam Attionu of causing financial loss to the State and other charges against her on July 30.
According to the motion sighted by 3news, “…this Honourable Court will be moved by the Attorney-General (Applicant) herein, praying for an order to stay the execution of the judgement granted in favour of the respondent herein pending appeal upon the grounds stated in the accompanying affidavit and for any further order(s) as this Honourable court may deem fit.”
The A-G believes that the High Court ruling which convicted Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu has merit and must stand.
