Members of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) have requested 48 hours to consult their members on whether to suspend or continue their ongoing industrial action.

The request follows a meeting between the leadership of the two unions, the Vice Chancellors’ Ghana, and the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to find a resolution to the impasse.

At the meeting, Mr. Iddrisu appealed to the striking unions to give the government one month to address their concerns.

“I want you to give me one month to resolve the issues, and I want you to furnish me with the data to help the resolution,” the Minister said.

He added: “I want us to have industrial harmony on all university campuses.”

Following the meeting, the unions agreed to consult their respective members before taking a decision on the way forward.

One of the union representatives said: “We are going to meet our constituents, and within 48 hours, we will see whether we will call off the strike or not.”

Another representative described the discussions with the Minister as positive, expressing optimism that a decision would be communicated within the agreed period.

“We have had positive discussions with the Minister, and hopefully, within 48 hours, we will communicate our decision to the Minister,” the representative said.

The outcome of the consultations is expected to determine whether GAUA and TUSAAG will suspend their industrial action or continue with the strike.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellors’ Ghana has also appealed to the two unions to call off the strike to allow academic and administrative activities on university campuses to return to normal.

The unions are expected to communicate their decision after completing consultations with their members.
