Several areas across Ghana have been hit by a power outage in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, 2026.
In Accra, communities including Adabraka, Weija, Tesano, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Adenta and Oyarifa have been affected.
Residents say their power went off around 4:15 a.m. The outage also hit Aburi in the Eastern region, Tamale in the Northern region, and parts of the Central and Ashanti regions.
Residents in Sefwi Wiawso, the Western North regional capital, have also been affected.
Households, businesses and essential services were impacted. GRIDCo and ECG are yet to explain what caused the disruption or when power will be fully restored.
This is the second major nationwide outage in less than a month. On July 29, 2026, similar outages hit Accra, Tema, Kasoa and parts of Ashanti and Eastern regions around the same time.
The latest incident is likely to raise fresh concerns about the stability of the national grid and power supply reliability.
